In reality, biodiversity has given us enough resources to make the ecosystem balanced. However, human activities are a big threat to these rich resources, one of which is farming activities (also industrial processes or activities are a bigger threat). It is sad to know that many smallholder farmers are still involved in activities that negatively impact the environment such as bush burning for clearing of land (especially during land preparation), cutting down of native trees that serve as habitats for birds and other animals, indiscriminate spraying of pesticides that affect pollinators and could affect nearby water bodies amongst other poor agricultural activities or practices. Sadly, some of these practices seem normal to them, having established myths to support them and encourage them to become long-age practices. Therefore, there is a need to correct these anomalies in order to reduce its impact on the environment and biodiversity in particular.

It is common knowledge that the impact of climate change is devastating on the livelihood of rural dwellers, and some of these practices have been identified as contributing factors and need to stop. We need to put more effort in sensitizing smallholder farmers on good agricultural practices and the value of engaging in better practices; which is beyond high yield but a conducive environment that supports sustainable growth and production.

To achieve sustainable growth and better livelihood, there is a need for smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable practices in their daily activities. Thus, we need to embrace the real change; by providing the appropriate knowledge for our farmers, identify better and safer alternatives or practices that give a better yield and safer environment. This would definitely influence them in changing their attitude and embracing sustainable practices. As much as the goal is food security, we also need to be able to breathe fresh air and preserve our heritage (biodiversity), which is our most priceless asset that nature has given to us.
